The “best” part of the above title is pretty much relative, because it’s just the way I look at Photoshop and the video tutorials I am going to link to here. Before that, here’s a question.

How do you prefer to learn graphic designing and Photoshop? Is it through text and screenshot based tutorials or through video lessons which seems more direct and natural? If you have been learning Photoshop for a while, I am sure you will opt for a mix-n-match of both.

That said and done lets head towards YouTube and some Photoshop study.

Adobe Photoshop Channel

Let’s start with Adobe’s own official Photoshop channel on YouTube. You can expect the videos to be slick and they are. Lightroom and Photoshop Elements have their own channels. There are two playlists you should definitely wade into – Photoshop Hidden Gems (14 videos but lots of hidden tips there) and Tutorials (64 videos). I learnt all about advanced selections and masking techniques here. Right now I am learning how to create a Triptych in Photoshop.

IceflowStudios Photoshop Video Training

It is definitely one of the more across the board Photoshop CS5 tutorial channels on YouTube. You have playlists that are specific for each Photoshop feature and skill that you need to master. Start from Photoshop: Basics (with nearly 50 videos) and then move on to the more advanced project based design tutorials. A nice tutorial I came across was about creating a neat face blur effect. You can also visit the channel’s mother website that’s also pretty well constructed.

Photoshopmama’s OPD

OPD stands for Obsessive Photoshop Disorder and you should have it too if you are a keen Photoshop learner. Going through 140+ videos should bring you to the brink if not topple you over to the Photoshop expert side. Mama Shan or Photoshopmama is a Photoshop certified expert and markets Photoshop resources like Photoshop Action packs and other digital knickknacks from her website, and teaches us all about Photoshop from her YouTube channel. Her tutorials cut a wide swathe from makeover and retouching tutorials to art on Photoshop. As a beginner you could be attracted to the series of videos that teach how to extract subjects from the background.

TutorVid

From the very basics of Photoshop, past the intermediate stages, and onto the final advanced in-depth tutorials, this channel covers it all quite well. The channel also has a quickie playlist – Learn Photoshop in 60 seconds/day – that has video lessons you can digest without batting your eyelids (e.g. How to resize ruler guides). Quite a few of the videos are on CS3 and CS4, but it doesn’t take away much from your learning as the stuff covered is direct and to the point. If you like creating video tutorials yourself, you can submit your own at the website and (as mentioned) earn some cash.

Gavin Hoey Photo Videos

Photography enthusiasts can head here as Gavin Hoey demonstrates the value of Photoshop for photographers. Digital imaging and photo manipulation is covered with the tutorials. The U.K. based professional photographer started his YouTube channel around 2008 and it receives quite a few hits each day.

Pixel For Life

This YouTube channel covers the range of web design, graphic design, and Photoshop. So, along with tutorials like Photoshop 3D cereal box technique, you also have tutorials that teach things like HTML-PHP mail form coding and CSS. The website and the YouTube channel is a two man operation and seem to be gradually evolving.

Creative Sweet TV

We will go with the nice guy from Australia Mike McHugh as he takes us through the entire Adobe Creative Suite. That’s Adobe with an Australian twang. You have to sift through InDesign, Illustrator, and sundry other programs in the Adobe suite to access specific Photoshop lessons. Alternatively, you can click on Playlist and select the one where all the Photoshop video lessons are bunched.

That’s not the end of it all of course. There are quite a few standalone video tutorials on Photoshop. Also, there are some good PS tutorials in other languages like Italian and Spanish. I have gone for seven which have systematic playlists that makes it easy to learn the intricacies of Photoshop methodically. The Household Products Database is an index of 10,000 consumer brands and their health effects. Along with manufacturer details you can check into its ingredients and chemical effects. The data is collected from public records and Material Safety Data Sheets available with the manufacturers. On the site, you can also search for product recall information.

Eat Well Guide

From diverse products we narrow down to food in an effort to locate freshly produced organic food. The site is U.S and Canada specific and includes family farms, restaurants, farmers’ markets, grocery stores that can help you source healthy food closest to your own location. You can download free local guides; plan a trip; read a blog on food, water, and energy; and also save you notes on the site. While on the site check out The Sustainable Table which educates consumers on food-related issues. Then for infotainment, there’s the funny viral film – The Meatrix.

Cosmetics Database

Skin Deep’s Cosmetic Database is geared towards safety in the use of chemically rich cosmetics and personal care products. The site provides safety ratings after comparing results from nearly 60 toxicity and regulatory databases. According to the site’s stats it covers 70,226 products across 2,891 brands. It also says that it is the world’s largest personal care product safety guide. Do read up on the articles that go deep into the facets of cosmetic safety. Sustain Lane

The community based website can give you information on nearly 30,000 green products and green businesses. Like any community website, a lot of the information comes from members. You get direct news of any local events taking place as well as valuable ‘insider tips’ on local green businesses and their products. Also, the SustainLane US City Rankings is a peer-reviewed, leading national survey that ranks the major US cities in terms of their sustainability practices. But ultimately, you might enjoy reading the articles on green and healthy living posted on the site.

Consumer Product Safety Commision

On this governmental website you can search by product type and learn about necessary safety regulations and standards of use. The site serves as a guide for public information. You can sign-up and receive product recall alerts. Consumers can also file an online complaint about an unsafe product.

These websites are mostly U.S specific. Perhaps it is a reflection of the world’s largest consumerist society. But so are other parts of the world. What these show is that the web could be the first stop for consumer empowerment. We have often shows you great ways to shop online and catch cool deals; then why not also take a bit of time and learn something about responsible shopping.
